My Safe Florida Home Program: How the Inspection Works
How the My Safe Florida Home inspection works, what qualifies for the matching grant, and how to prepare your Pinellas County home.
The My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program helps Florida homeowners pay for hurricane upgrades — like wind-rated windows, doors, and roof improvements — through a state matching grant of up to $10,000. Every grant starts with a free wind mitigation inspection by a state-approved inspector.
Who qualifies for a MSFH inspection
- Single-family, site-built home that is your homestead
- Insured value of $700,000 or less
- Located in Florida (the program is open statewide while funding lasts)
What the inspector checks
The MSFH inspection is the same Uniform Mitigation Verification (form OIR-B1-1802) used for your insurance discount. We document:
- Roof shape — hip, gable, or other
- Roof covering — meets FBC or older code
- Roof deck attachment — nail size and spacing
- Roof-to-wall connections — clips, single wraps, double wraps
- Secondary water resistance (SWR)
- Opening protection — impact glass or rated shutters on windows, doors, and garage
How to prepare
- Pull together any permits or receipts for past roof, window, or door work
- Clear access to the attic hatch
- Make sure the garage door label is visible
- Unlock any side gates so we can photograph every elevation
After the inspection
You'll get a state-issued report listing which upgrades will most reduce your wind premium and qualify for the matching grant. Bring it to a participating contractor and your insurance agent — most homeowners save several hundred dollars per year on premiums, before counting the grant itself.
